Strengthen Every Defensive Shooting Skill
This course is conducted as an NRA Defensive Pistol Class. This course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence.
Skills Covered During Training
As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following: how to apply the NRA rules for safe gun handling when carrying a concealed firearm, basic principles of concealment, the difference between cover and concealment, drawing from the holster, levels of mental awareness, developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection, clearing common stoppages, use of pocket pistols, and more.
Course Materials and Instructor Requirements
Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home handbook, the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and the NRA Defensive Pistol certificate. This course is only conducted by NRA Certified Advanced Pistol Instructors.
Required Prerequisites
The required prerequisite for students to attend this course is:
- Possess a valid Permit to Carry Concealed from:
- South Dakota Enhanced Permit
- Minnesota
- Nebraska
- North Dakota Enhanced Permit
- Utah (Resident or Non-Resident)
- SD Enhanced Permit to Carry Concealed Class Certificate of Completion from Schlueter Firearms Instruction.

- Firearms & Use of Force
- NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm.

Successful NRA DEFENSIVE PISTOL students:
- Have the option to complete:
- A pre-course evaluation to attend NRA Personal Protection outside the Home.
- This evaluation meets the prerequisite training requirements to attend our:
- We recommend using a handgun appropriate for self-defense chambered in a minimum caliber of 9mm/.38 caliber.
- We recommend using a full sized pistol (e.g. Glock 17), compact pistol (e.g. Glock 19), or sub-compact pistol (e.g. Glock 26, or 43) chambered in minimum of 9mm/.38 caliber.
- We do not recommend the use of “Pocket Pistols” which are a very small handgun usually in .25, .32, or .380 calibers. Their small size and complexity will greatly increase the difficulty level of learning new techniques and could cause increased frustration on the part of the student..
- No Derringers are allowed.
- No single-action revolvers are allowed.
- The use of a .22 Long Rifle caliber pistols are not allowed in this class.
- No pistols are allowed in class that have known safety issues:
- Firing when dropped.
- Firing when the trigger is not being pulled.
- Firing while in a holster & the trigger is not being pulled.
- Not firing when the trigger is pulled.
- Or any other issue found later which would make a pistol or any handgun unsafe to use.

The approved method of carrying in a holster in one of our classes is with an outside the waist band belt mounted holster, this is required for any class where holsters are allowed. In our defensive firearms courses we have set up the criteria for approved holsters for the student’s safety.

- QUALITY STRONG SIDE HIP HOLSTER.
- WE REQUIRE THAT YOU TRAIN WITH A FIRING SIDE, OUTSIDE THE WAIST BAND, BELT HOLSTER WHICH SECURELY HOLDS THE PISTOL SECURELY AND FULLY COVERS THE TRIGGER.
- If your preferred method of carry is or will be purse, fanny pack, or other position, we can give you advice on those methods of concealed carry during class.
